    The braking system connects to the taillight. Applying the brakes illuminates the taillight – something that is rare in many entry-level and mid-level e-bikes.

    More interestingly is the connection between the brakes and motor. The motor automatically shuts off when you pull the brake lever. This setup means the brake won’t compete with the motor. Ultimately, both components will last longer.

    Battery

    A 672 Wh Samsung lithium battery powers the bike. I like that Rad Power Bikes made the battery removable and easy to re-mount. It offers the flexibility of not having to bring the entire bike inside during charging.

    Plug the bike directly or remove the battery to juice it up whichever way is more convenient for you.

    The battery itself is powerful and can last for a long time. But I strongly recommend upgrading the charger to a 3- or 4-amp charger. The 2-amp charger that comes with the batter can take more than 6 hours to go from zero to 100%.

    A 2.75” LCD mounts in the center of handlebars, allowing you to quickly see the readouts without taking your eyes off the road.

Sine’s strongest abilities are in accelerating and adapting to going uphill, then providing a smooth ride when headed downhill regardless of the terrain.

    The Atlas series uses two primary kinds of wheels: the entry-level Atlas employs a HED Ardennes Disc while all steps above offer the ENVE 3.4 SES Disc. While both types of wheel offer a great sense of control and speed, the ENVE tires offer even more. The rim sizes are different with the ENVE with a 38mm front and a 42mm rear. This makes the bike accelerate quickly and become more aerodynamic, especially when going up and downhill.

    The wheels are chosen to make a very stable, controlled, and fast ride, which is excellent for biking in the mountains. The control is necessary to command steep hills while the wheels are lightweight and ready for a fast ride up a hill too.

    You get a couple of options for gears with the Alchemy Atlas. The Ultegra models come with Shimano Ultegra cranks and Dura Ace brakes. These shift super smoothly, look very nice, and slow down nicely without jittering or jumping. The next step up comes on the Force eTap AXS Road model with the SRAM Force eTap gearset. As the name eTap indicates this is an electric gearset with some built-in customization with LED lights and buttons on the bars. The eTap is a bit chunky with housing for its cylinders.

    Going one step higher is the Red eTap AXS Road offers carbon fiber materials versus plastic for the Force eTap. Red looks chunky too, but still looks good.

    The biggest comment we have for gears is that with an electronic gearset, shifting makes almost no sound and is presented without comment. You just know it happens.

    When it comes to chains, the Red eTap comes with a paired Red AXS. The Force eTap model comes with a matching Force eTap chain.

    Brakes

    As with the gear types, the Alchemy Atlas starts it’s initial models with Shimano Ultegra brakes to go with their Shimano Ultegra cranks. These are often compared to the Shimano Dura Ace di2, which are available on upper levels of Alchemy Atlas, but the Ultegra weigh just a bit more and offer very similar braking performance. For a road bike meant to cruise through mountains, Dura Ace brakes are quite important to slow you down evenly while descending from the foothills.

    The eTap AXS models also include SRAM Force eTrap brakes, of course. These are nicely paired hydraulic disc brakes with customization. Just like the Shimano brake sets, these are meant to stop you cleanly and efficiently while going downhill and can be customized to your preferences in regard to responsiveness.

    The battery is a 500w, 48v battery. The motor is a 500-watt mid-drive torque-sensing motor with 140 Nm torque max, which gives it a range of 30-60 miles when the pedal-assist mode is used.  This rates it as a Class 1 electric bike when it is set at 20mph.  However, with multiple settings available, your speed can easily be increased to a Class 3 topping 28 mph.

    Some other minor, yet important, features included on the frame of this electronic bike are automatic front and rear LED lights that are wired straight into the main battery, so they have no risk of failing on you which provides extra safety. Finally, they have included a premium digital visual display on the handlebar set that includes five modes, a speedometer, and all of the other settings.

    The nylon fibers of these tires were created to have a flat profile which keeps the tires from adding additional bulk or weight to the bike.  They also have an industry original compound that ensures that the tires do have not only a fast-rolling centerline but also have great corning traction.

    These tires have a new SG2 Puncture Protection which any city-dwelling bike rider will tell you oh so necessary.  This is a lightweight nylon insert.  The nylon completely covers the interior f the tire to ensure that every bit is defended against punctures or slashes. This also provides you with the extra protection you might need to take this bike onto gravel surfaces.

    The Priority Current uses an E-Bike specific Shimano Inter 5 Internal Hub system combined with a Gates Carbon Drive CDX belt.  This shifting system is designed specifically for use in electronic bikes, which means it can keep up with the higher forces involved with pedaling. 

    As with gear systems used in other Priority models, this one is also fully sealed, which protects the system from environmental damage and extends its useful life. This system allows the rider to easily shift gears at the push of a display button while still being able to handle the manual shifting.

    The hub system is paired with a Gates Carbon Drive CDX  belt drive system. These low maintenance systems have a life span of up to 4 times the standard chain belt system.  They can also handle a lot more power, making them ideal for an electric bike drive system.

All of this comes in a powerful yet exceptionally light package that doesn’t add a lot of additional weight to the bike.

    These brakes are reliable and have all of the stopping power needed to stop even from top electric speeds.  No ordinary bicycle breaks were up to the job, which is why Tektro designed these sensor-controlled hydraulic disc breaks specifically for E-Bikes.

    The Trek X Caliber 7 is what many would consider an entry-level bike in terms of the price. At roughly 1k, it’s a reasonably priced machine designed to give you a lot of room to grow before you need a more advanced bike. 

    The frame is reasonably lightweight, and everything about this bike is optimized to make upgrading the different components simple and affordable. 

    Both of the color finishes available on the X Caliber 7 are beautiful. The paint is durable and hard-wearing, and the overall design looks good. 

    While this might not be the most durable mountain bike out there, it’s more than up to the challenge of most XC trails. Lightweight enough to work well in most settings, the X Caliber 7 is also designed with cargo racks that make it a good option as a commuter, cross country, and leisure bike.

    This fork also has 51mm offset on the largest size wheels, 29″, which gives tires a little more room to move and adapt to the demands of the trail.

    Trek’s smart sizing system helps to ensure that your bike will be fitted with the best possible wheels for the frame. There are two wheel sizes to choose from, and while most frame sizes will be fitted with the more aggressive and efficient 29″ wheels, smaller wheels are more effective for shorter riders on the smaller frame sizes. 

    Whatever wheel size your frame comes with, 27.5″ or 29″, you’ll have plenty of traction. The wider rims allow you to mount tires with good grip and deep traction for wider terrain riding. 

    The design isn’t quite tubeless-ready. But, upgrading to a tubeless-ready rim is simple enough, and shouldn’t be too expensive.

    Since you’ll also be working with Shimano derailleurs, both from the Alivio line, the whole system is very smooth and effective. The shifters themselves are easy to use and unlikely to jam. The derailleur system needs minimal maintenance, no more than any other derailleurs. 

    You’ll have the options and versatility to need for even the most technical trails, and the flexibility to handle hills with ease.

    You’ll also be getting a Shimano brake and rotor system. The disc brakes are highly effective and fast to respond. The hydraulic disc brake system is also a significant improvement over the v-brakes or mechanical disc brakes that are much more common on cross-country bikes in this price range. 

    This brake design is also very low on maintenance requirements since you’re extremely unlikely to get dirt and debris in any of the moving parts. 

    Since the internal routing system helps to protect the wiring, it’s also much easier to perform any needed maintenance or to set up new cabling systems. 

    The biggest thing you’ll need to watch for if you’re used to other braking systems is that this system is likely to be more responsive than you’re used to. Start slow and experiment to see how much pressure you need to get the speed modulation you’re going for.

    Trek X Caliber 7 vs 8

    It makes sense to start by looking at the latest release in the X Caliber line. The X Caliber 8 is the 2020 model just released for this line and does feature some components and design improvements that make it a better option for some riders. 

    Price-wise, these two are relatively similar. The X Caliber 7 is usually the more affordable of the two. But, as demand for the older model has increased, and when the X Caliber 8 begins to go on sale, that may not always be true. 

    In the X Caliber 8, Trek has upgraded the driveshaft to Shimano’s Deore line, giving you 20 gears instead of 18. In terms of maintenance and performance, the Deore is similarly low-effort and high-performing, but the added flexibility makes it a better overall system. 

    They’ve also slightly improved the fork, although the models are very similar, the newer fork system offers just a little more effectiveness in your suspension. 

    Overall, both models are great beginner bikes. But, if you can afford a couple hundred more to get the latest system, it’s probably going to last longer and work better as a long-term bike. 

    Trek X Caliber 7 vs Roscoe 7

    This is another interesting comparison because these two Trek lines actually use the same frame. However, the components and tires that come on each model aren’t very similar at all. 

    The biggest difference between these models is how you want to ride them. The X Caliber 7, and the whole X Caliber line, are designed for speed and precision. These are real trail-eaters that don’t need much encouragement to reach top speeds. 

    The Roscoe, on the other hand, is designed for a slightly heavier, slacker, grippier riding experience. That makes them slower than the X Caliber in general, but also much steadier. 

    If you like your trails loose and fast, look to X Caliber models. Looking for a slightly slower but more controlled ride, the Roscoe 7 might be your better bet. 

    Price-wise these bikes are so similar that it shouldn’t be much of a deciding factor one way or the other. 

    Trek X Caliber 7 vs Marlin 7

    The X Caliber 7 and the Marlin 7 are both designed for largely the same market. They’re reasonably affordable entry-level XC mountain bikes that are designed for the best possible performance at a low-price range. 

    However, the Marlin 7 is a couple of hundred dollars cheaper than the X Caliber 7. While the components lists are similar, the Marlin 7 is a step down in almost all component categories. 

    That doesn’t mean that it’s not a good high-performance bike, the Marlin 7 is still a great entry-level bike. 

    However, you will get serious performance improvements, both in speed and in shifting ability, if you can afford to upgrade to the X Caliber line. Check our guide to marlin 7 here.

    Conclusion

    Overall, the X Caliber 7 might not be the best XC bike out there, It’s not even the best XC bike in its own model line. That doesn’t mean that it’s not a solid entry-level option and one that’s particularly well suited to fast an adventurous rider who is looking for a bike that can grow with you. 

    Its frame is designed to be easy to upgrade, highly durable, eye-catching, and most of all, fast and extremely efficient.

    I’ve used a lot of bikes over the years and Trek Dual Sport 2 is my favorite commuter/hybrid bike on the market.

    Feel free to try other bikes if you are searching for an all-purpose bike, but if I were you, I’d go with one that’s proven to be high quality, easy to drive, and heavy-duty bike.

    Overview

    This affordable entry-level model features some great adaptations that make it an effective and desirable option for a commuter bike. The frame of the Trek Dual Sport 2 bike is lightweight and well-balanced, especially when paired with all-terrain tires like the ones that are installed when you buy the bike. 

    This model is relatively accessory light, with most of the manufacturing budget having gone to get better components on a good frame. 

    While this might be a good commuter bike for the road, we were also pleased to see some mountain bike adaptations, like a suspension fork and hydraulic disc brakes, adding to the effectiveness of this design. 

    Things to Consider Before Buying a Commuter or Hybrid Bike 

    Trek Dual Sport 2

    Commuter bikes are often the more all-purpose style of bike. They aren’t really meant for racing, which means that they’re generally a little heavier. They also use wider tires with a grippier tread that gives you more stability but potentially slow the bike down a little. 

    These bikes also often have mounting holes drilled, but don’t always come with the accessories you may want to make them a more commuter-friendly model. 

    That said, it’s often cheaper to buy the accessories you want and add them than it is to buy a hybrid bike that comes with accessories pre-assembled. 

    Overall, commuter bikes are good as an option for people who want to commute, and for leisure riders who aren’t looking to take on big races or challenging trails.

    For more accessories, you may need to take this frame to a shop to get the necessary modifications. Fortunately, for most commuter bikes, you shouldn’t need much more than just a rack. 

    However, where a lot of commuter bikes allow for a slightly heavier frame design than good mountain bikes and racing bikes, this model is a little lighter than average. It’s less than a pound of difference,

    Suspension System

    Unlike a lot of commuter bikes, this model does come with a pretty good front suspension. The suspension is all in the fork, and the Trek Dual Sport 2 features an SR Suntour NEX, coil spring, preload hydraulic assisted suspension. 

    There’s only about 63mm of travel in that fork, but that’s still a lot more than you can expect from most road bikes. It’s more than enough to absorb the occasional bump in the road or a small pothole or two. 

    It also features a hydraulic lockout system that makes it easy to avoid wear and tear on your suspension by locking it in place. That can also be a good option anytime you’re riding somewhere you really want to feel the terrain through your bike. 

    Fortunately, locking and unlocking the suspension is relatively simple, so you don’t need to worry about going through a complicated process every time. You should be able to reach the lockout mechanism easily, seated on the bike, or standing next to it.

    The wheels on are designed to fit 700x40c tires, a common and adaptable size for commuter and road bikes. 

    The rims have a double-walled system for added durability. They’re made from aluminum alloy, which, while not quite as lightweight as carbon fiber wheel rims, does tend to cut down on the noise from those wheels. 

    That’s less of an issue since Trek Dual Sport 2 is designed with disc brakes, but it’s still worth considering in case you upgrade to a combination system down the line.

    The drivetrain on this hybrid bike is all Shimano parts, from the Altus line. They’re affordable, but also highly effective, with minimal pressure needed to switch gears. 

    The Trek Dual Sport 2 also comes with a particularly wide range of gears, perfect for navigating urban hills and dealing with heavy stop and go traffic. 

    You’ll get one 8 gear system, and the other shifter is a 3 gear. That gives you a total of 24 distinct settings to move through. As you get more accustomed to the system, you’ll discover that the wide range of gears on this bike makes it much simpler to make the most out of your pedaling power.

    Next to the frame, the brake system is probably the second most important part of your bike. It’s one of the most important safety features on your bike. 

    Fortunately, since Trek Dual Sport 2 comes with a hydraulic disc brake from Tektro, you’re in good hands when it comes to stopping power. 

    Disc brakes don’t put pressure on the rim like more standard V-brakes. Instead, they apply pressure directly to the wheel rotor, in a more efficient use of friction that stops your bike faster than rim braking. 

    Disc brakes are also usually better protected than rim brakes, which means that they’ll need slightly less maintenance in the long run. You’ll still need to plan on regular maintenance when you can, but otherwise, these brakes should need little adjustment or care.

    Last, we want to take a look at how this bike holds up against some of the similar Trek models. After all, each bike is designed with a specific purpose in mind, and knowing what the strengths of similar models are can help you narrow down which option is the right one for you. 

    Trek Dual Sport 2 vs 3

    The Trek Dual Sport 2 and the Dual Sport 3 are, at first glance, very similar models. Both are hybrid bikes that are beefy enough they would have been considered mountain bikes only a few years ago. Both use a lightweight aluminum frame, and both have front suspension and hydraulic disc brakes. 

    However, for the additional $200 to upgrade to the Dual Sport 3, you also get tubeless-ready rims, an upgrade Shimano Acera drivetrain, and a matching Shimano hydraulic brake set. 

    Those changes lead to a better-optimized bike, but aren’t necessarily worth the additional cost, depending on how you want to ride the bike.

    If you’re looking for a true commuter bike, the Dual Sport 2 is plenty for what you’ll need, and can even handle some light trail riding. 

    If you’re looking for a commuter bike, you can also take to the mountains regularly, it might be worth getting the component improvements included in the Dual Sport 3. 

    Trek Dual Sport 2 vs FX 2

    The FX is a lighter, slimmer design than the Trek Dual Sport 2, but since both bikes are in the same price range, it’s difficult not to compare them. The FX 2 is a more recent model than the Dual Sport 2, but that doesn’t mean that it’s necessarily using nicer components. 

    The Trek Dual Sport 2 also uses a Tektro hydraulic disc brake system, and also uses Altus line Shimano gears in the drivetrain. 

    However, at approximately 26 lbs, the FX 2 is three pounds lighter than the Trek Dual Sport 2. It also uses slimmer tires with less of a significant tread. 

    Where the Dual Sport 2 is almost a mountain or rugged trail bike, the FX 2 is much closer to a road bike. Both are great bikes for their price range and for entry-level users, but where the Dual Sport 2 is more rugged and stable, the FX 2 is going to be significantly speedier and is more designed for the road.

    Trek Dual Sport 2 vs Giant Roam 2

    The Trek Dual Sport 2 and the Giant Roam 2 are about as similar as two different bike models possibly could be. They have a similar frame, similar weight, and the same weight capacity. 

    Both models use a hydraulic disc brake system. The Dual Sport 2 uses a Tektro model, while the Roam 2 uses a Shimano, but they are in roughly the same price point and have similar performance ratings. 

    Both of these bikes also have a mild front suspension system in the fork. In fact, both bikes use the same fork. 

    With bikes this similar (both even use a Shimano drivetrain), the next question needs to be if there is a significant difference in price. Here too, these two models are very similar. They are usually within $50 of each other, and so a good sale on either model might make it more affordable. 

    However, which prices this similar, it’s less about which is cheaper at the time, and more about which brake system and configuration you prefer. If you’re truly not sure which bike is a better fit for you, see if there are any local bike stores around that will let you give both models a quick test. 

    Conclusion

    The Trek Dual Sport 2 might once have been considered suitable for mountains, and with its front suspension, hydraulic disc brakes, and durable design, it can still be used as one on at least some mountain trails. 

    Now considered more of a hybrid, this bike is a good option for commuters who are looking for a slightly sportier model, or who want the added flexibility of an all-terrain bike.

    I tested nearly two dozen hybrid bikes over the years. The Trek Verve 1 is my go-to for any looking for an entry-level/Beginner hybrid bike.

    Trust me, you do not want to buy the wrong product. It’s better to get it right the first time, or you’ll waste over $500 like I did when I start riding bikes.

    Things to Consider Before Buying a Hybrid Bike

    If you’re considering buying a hybrid bike, there are many important features to remember throughout the buying process. Here are some of the top ones to bear in mind.

    Gears

    Gears

    Not every cyclist will need the same number of gears on their hybrid bike. When deciding on the number that’s right for you, consider your fitness levels and the terrain you’ll be riding on. For example, if you’ll regularly choose a route with lots of hills and rocky surfaces, you’ll want to opt for more gears. This is especially true with hills as you’ll need an extensive range of gears to help you climb and descend safely and easily.

    On the other hand, if you’ll primarily be riding on flat terrain, you won’t require as many gears as those planning on climbing uphill. In fact, the fewer gears you have, the lighter your bike will be since it won’t have as many components. Bikes with only one speed can be perfect for some, especially as the rear hub enables you to coast like on a standard bike.

    Suspension System

    Next, consider what type of suspension system you’ll need. Commonly, many hybrid bikes don’t have a suspension. In fact, suspension forks add weight and can make pedaling more difficult. Plus, if most of your routes are on smooth pavements, you won’t benefit from this feature.

    Alternatively, a front suspension helps to absorb impacts on the front wheel, making the overall ride smoother and more comfortable for the cyclist. This feature is certainly appropriate if you’ll be riding on off-road conditions and require the additional support.

    The frame’s material has a huge impact on performance and durability. There are several to choose from, but the top three are aluminum, steel, and carbon fiber. 

    Aluminum is affordable, strong, stiff, and lightweight. With newer developments, this material can improve shock absorption to make riding on tough terrain smoother and avoid cyclists from feeling the impact.

    Alternatively, steel is beneficial for its strength and durability, although it is heavier than aluminum. Steel is less expensive to make and purchase, which is ideal for those on a budget. Plus, this material can handle a larger maximum weight, making it great for commuters adding a basket and belongings to their bicycle.

    Finally, carbon fiber is another preferred frame material. It’s lighter than aluminum and much stronger than steel, although, these beneficial factors can make it more expensive. Although, you can purchase a hybrid bike that features only carbon fiber forks or seat posts, rather than the entire frame is made of this.

    Brake Type

    Finally, it’s time to decide if you’ll choose rim brakes or disc brakes. Rim brakes are the most common on hybrid bikes and feature pads that grip onto the wheel rims. This brake system is more economical, and it’s easier to replace worn pads, leading to less maintenance.

    However, this brake system can wear out the wheel rim over time, meaning you have to replace the wheel if you don’t monitor its progress. Compared to rim disc brakes, this brake system is less effective in wet and muddy conditions. It also requires more effort to apply your fingers on the levers if you want to brake aggressively.

    Alternatively, hydraulic disc brakes provide stronger braking and less finger effort. This makes it more user-friendly and beneficial for riding in tough environmental conditions. Or mechanical disc brakes require manual adjustments as the pads can wear. If you don’t keep an eye on mechanical disc brakes, they can become worn quickly, leading to other areas of damage on your bike.

    The shifting setup has two triggers on the right side of the drop-handlebar. The large paddle shifts down and the smaller one shifts up. This works really well and is comfortable for most riders.

    The frame is a superior upgrade compared to other bikes in this group. It’s made of aluminum and the bike has a carbon fiber fork. This makes for a lightweight frame at only 24 pounds, that also resists rust and is stiffer. The increased control in turns is one of the great road bike features that the Apollo offers up to those who choose it.

    The Byway tires are nubby on the outsides but smooth in the middle, a feature that gives you that really great dual-ride feeling. Adding to the comfort of the ride is a wider-than-normal saddle which is super comfortable for your road-riding needs.
